Romance Gender Restrictions

Quick Answer

Witchbrook explicitly allows hairstyles, clothing types and facial hair regardless of gender. Earlier development coverage also discussed queer relationships and gender-neutral character options.

Witchbrook explicitly allows hairstyles, clothing types and facial hair regardless of gender. Earlier development coverage also discussed queer relationships and gender-neutral character options. Those are meaningful indications of the game's direction, but the available current material does not give a complete player-identity and partner-eligibility matrix.

The specific romance requirements explained so far concern a covenmate's personal story, readiness to date and commitment. No hairstyle or outfit has been identified as a requirement for unlocking a partner.

Earlier coverage did discuss queer relationships

A development-history video summarises Pilgrim's Discord updates from October 2019 to September 2020 as including gender-neutral character options, witch as a gender-neutral term and the possibility of queer relationships. A later Reddit romance discussion also points to an older screenshot when answering a question about gay and lesbian relationships.

That means it would be misleading to say the subject has never been discussed. However, the original Discord answer and linked screenshot were not available to verify here. The historical direction should not be rewritten as a current guarantee covering every character, identity option and pairing.

The firmer current statement concerns customisation: the developers explicitly place no gender limits on hairstyles, clothing types or facial hair.

Choose your appearance without a gender-locked wardrobe

Hair, fringes and facial hair can be combined independently. Clothing supports up to eleven layers, with those hair options excluded from the layer count.

Mossport's salon also lets you change hairstyle, colour and facial hair later. Your initial appearance does not require keeping one look throughout college, and the announced clothing rules do not assign a skirt, beard or haircut to a restricted player category.

Those features let you express the student you want to make. They do not identify an outfit change as a solution to a covenmate being unavailable for a date.

Readiness and commitment are the explained romance conditions

The game has eleven romanceable covenmates, seven of whom have been introduced: Hana, Eli, Cormac, Pip, Leif, Evadne and Kiara.

They become ready to date at different points, depending on their circumstances and story. A reserved character may need more time to open up than someone more outgoing. That is a character-specific relationship condition, rather than evidence of a player-gender restriction.

Multiplayer adds another distinct condition: players can pursue the same covenmate until one goes steady. The TGS interview describes one committed partner for each candidate. An existing commitment to another player is not the same issue as gender eligibility.

Friendship remains a complete story route

You can progress each covenmate's story without dating. This lets you learn about the cast and support their personal journeys before deciding whether you want romance.

For a specific pairing, the unresolved question is its actual eligibility. The confirmed appearance freedom and earlier queer-development coverage are useful context, but neither should be made into a detailed rule the current relationship material does not state.
