Witchbrook Announcement History

Quick Answer

Witchbrook received its official public name in 2018, following public discussion of the magic-school project as Spellbound in 2017.

Witchbrook received its official public name in 2018, following public discussion of the magic-school project as Spellbound in 2017. The concept originated in an internal pitch in 2016. Those dates refer to different events: the idea's origin, early public information, and the reveal of the Witchbrook title.

If you are trying to identify the announcement you remember, the name is usually the most useful clue. Spellbound points to the early development period; Witchbrook points to the final title; the first-look video and its release window belong to a much later reveal.

Match the year to the event

YearMilestoneWhat was established
2016An internal concept pitchRosie Ball and Abi Cooke proposed a magic-school game within Chucklefish
2017Public developer interviews and early imagesThe project was being discussed while the team still described a formal announcement as some way off
2018The Witchbrook name revealFinn Brice publicly announced the official title
2025The modern first-look revealA much broader look at the game in action arrived with a winter 2025 release window
2026The specific release-date announcementJanuary 28, 2027 was announced for PC and consoles

The first three entries explain why accounts of the game's announcement sometimes use different years. The last two explain why someone who discovered the game through a trailer may remember a much more recent announcement.

The 2016 pitch was the origin of the idea

The development retrospective identifies producer Rosie Ball and Abi Cooke as the people who proposed the concept during a 2016 pitching process. At that point, it was known simply as Magic School Game.

The process followed the completion of Starbound. Team members pitched ideas, with the company voting on what to make next. Although a shorter project was initially expected to be attractive after Starbound, the longer magic-school proposal also caught the team's interest. Chucklefish chose both that concept and the shorter project that became Wargroove.

This is an internal origin story. It explains when the idea was selected inside the studio, rather than establishing a public launch announcement or a promised release year.

The 2017 Spellbound discussions came before a formal announcement

The early developer interview is unusually clear about the distinction. The game had not yet been officially announced or given a final title. Finn Brice explained that the team wanted to settle its tone and feel before the formal announcement, while continuing to share work in development.

That makes the existence of early screenshots compatible with the team saying an announcement was still ahead. A public glimpse of a project and a formal introduction with a settled identity are different milestones.

The working name also has a specific origin. Before Wargroove had its final name, the team had internally called it Warbound. After Starbound and Warbound, Spellbound completed the naming joke. Artist Adam Riches described it as a name that had stuck, while emphasizing that the final title remained undecided.

Spellbound was therefore an early name for this developing project. It was not a separate released game that Witchbrook later continued.

The 2018 reveal supplied the official name

The later naming announcement identified the project as Witchbrook, following Finn Brice's public reveal of that title. It also explicitly said a release date had not yet been announced.

This is the appropriate milestone if your question concerns when the final name became public. It does not mean the game was promised for 2018, and it does not make every feature discussed in earlier interviews a permanent commitment.

For example, early coverage discussed combat ideas and relationships while systems were still being explored. Those articles document what the team was considering at that stage. The current gameplay descriptions and later development blogs explain the design players are being shown now.

The later trailers announced different things

The March 2025 first look introduced the modern presentation and a planned winter 2025 window. That window subsequently changed. The October 27, 2026 announcement then set January 28, 2027 as the specific launch date.

The later college reveal is visually distinct from the early working-title scene.

Use the current release announcement if you want to know when you can play. Use 2016 for the internal concept, 2017 for early Spellbound-era public discussion, and 2018 for the Witchbrook name reveal. Keeping those events separate preserves what each announcement actually told its audience.
